Facts & FAQ about FTA
What are the steps to use GoArmyEd?
- Step 1: EASY GoArmyEd Account Set Upfollow all the steps until the end of the PowerPoint to ensure successful account set up. If it is your first time using GoArmyEd, it may be necessary to upload a copy of your Statement of Understanding (SOU) via e-file. If it is necessary to manually upload your SOU, ensure all three pages are uploaded or your account will not be approved.
- Once you've applied for your account, you will receive an e-mail via AKO approving your account or indicating that additional steps must be taken or that you are approved to apply for FTA. You can expect to receive this e-mail within 48 hours.
- Step 2: Easy Guide to Requesting TA in GoArmyEd
- Use the above guide if your school is NOT on this list of GoArmyEd Integrated Schools List
- If you are attending a school with a small concentration of military members, it is necessary for you to upload a documented degree plan and itemized bill via e-File. The degree plan must be personalized to you (catalog printouts are not acceptable), signed by an advisor and readable. Your itemized bill must have your identifying information on it and be in a format that cannot be edited. For instance, a screenshot of your bill is acceptable; a Word document of your bill copied and pasted is not. Your application will NOT be approved without these two documents.
When is the application deadline to apply for TA in GoArmyEd?
- The START DATE OF THE CLASSES; no exceptions. Exceptions to Policies will not be considered. You may apply for FTA up to 60 days prior to the class start date.
How long does it take to get my application approved in GoArmyEd?
- Application approval can take up to 3 weeks during the semester rush, so it is advised that you apply as soon as possible to ensure your FTA is approved prior to the class start date. To speed up the process and help guarantee your application is not rejected the first time you submit it, verify that the tuition and fees statement for the semester has your identifying information on it and is not in a Word document. In addition, your degree plan MUST specify the class that you are applying for FTA for. Unfortunately, if you are applying for LAW 220 and your degree plan says 'LAW Elective' that class will not get approved; the class must be specified on the degree plan.
Do I need to submit my transcripts to the Education Office at the end of the semester?
- Beginning spring 2012 your school will submit your grades for you at the end of the semester. However, if you received FTA for fall 2011, you must this transcript in prior to receiving TA for summer 2012 or your application will not be approved. Send an official transcript to:
- ATTN: TRANSCRIPTS/ FALL 2011
- Education Service Office, Building 15
- 2200 W. 35th Street
- Austin, TX 78703
How do I submit my degree plan/ student agreement and my tuition & fees statement to GoArmyEd?
- If you are attending a school with a large concentration of military members, the school will upload your degree plan/ student agreement and tuition and fees statement for you.
- If you are attending a school with a small concentration of military members, you will need to upload your degree plan/ student agreement and tuition and fees statement via e-File.
How do I upload documents to e-File in GoArmyEd?
My GoArmyEd account is suspended because of a low GPA (<2.0). How do I raise it?
- If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation in which FTA benefits are suspended due to FTA GPA falling below 2.0, the process to raise your FTA GPA has changed. In order to raise your GPA using self-funded classes, you MUST submit an application in GoArmyEd PRIOR TO THE CLASS START DATE in the same manner as if you were applying for FTA. Enter $0.00 in the tuition cost section. If you do not complete this process, your grades for those self-funded classes will NOT be considered for GPA purposes, meaning you will have to continue paying for your classes. If you need further assistance please call 512 782-5515 and speak with a guidance counselor.
What is the best way to get help for a GoArmyEd issue?
- If you have questions about your account, FTA, GoArmyEd, application status, etc, submit a Help Desk ticket in GoArmyEd. Help Desk tickets get priority; response time is usually 24 hours.
How do I apply for the State Tuition Reimbursement Program (STRP)?
- The process to apply for STRP is now a separate step. To learn more, scroll down to State Tuition Reimbursement Program.
About STRP
The Texas State Tuition Reimbursement Program (STRP) is available to Texas National Guard Service Members, Texas Air National Guard Airmen & State Guard Members. STRP allows eligible members to receive tution reimbursement for up to 12 credits per semester and reimburses mandatory fees associated with your college. STRP is a state-funded program, therefore only TX-based schools are eligible to receive STRP.
Special Requirements for TXARNG Soldiers
The Education Services Office strives to assist the Soldier as much as possible in paying for education through federal and state funding. Due to budget constraints, and in order to correctly allocate funding, it is a requirement for all Texas Army National Guard Service Members to submit an application for federal tution assistance through GoArmyEd before applying for STRP. Once the application for federal tuition assistance is approved by GoArmyEd, Service Members may then apply for STRP if additional funding is needed.
Officers and Officer Candidates without a four year degree who do not want to commit to the four year service obligation required to receive FTA are not subject to applying for FTA through GoArmyEd first. These Service Members may apply for benefits through the STRP, without first applying for FTA.
Application Deadlines
Fall- 15 September
Spring- 15 February

Facts and FAQ About STRP
What costs does STRP cover?
- Public schools - STRP will pay up to $4100 per credit towards tuition and fees, not to exceed 12 credit hours per semester.
- Private schools
- At the undergraduate level, STRP will pay up to $173 per credit, plus $100 per credit towards fees, not to exceed 12 credit hours per semester.
- At the graduate level, STRP will pay up to $200 per credit hour, plus $100 per credit towards fees, not to exceed 12 credit hours per semester. Depending on funding, STRP may or may not be available for graduate level classes.
- Can STRP be used in conjunction with Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA)?
- Yes. Generally, if FTA does not cover 100% of the tuition, STRP will be used to cover the difference. For example, if a class costs $300 per credit, FTA will pay up to $250 per credit and the remaining $50 per credit will be paid for with STRP. Both STRP & FTA are paid directly to the school up to 100% of tuition and fees cost.
- Can STRP be used in conjunction with the GI Bill?
- Yes.
- What schools are eligible to receive STRP?
- The TX STRP is a state-funded program, therefore only schools whose headquarters are located in TX are eligible to receive STRP. To see if your school is eligible, visit College For All Texans: Apply to Colleges, scroll to the bottom and look for your school.
- Who is eligible for STRP?
- Actively drilling M Day Soldiers; AGR Soldiers are not eligible to use STRP.

- Soldiers who do not have any adverse action flags.
- My school has not received a payment yet. Why not?
- The State Tuition Reimbursement Program reimburses the cost of tuition and fees, therefore STRP does not pay until the end of the semester. As a result, Service Members should not rely on STRP to pay for their classes up front.
- Where can I learn about other states' benefits?
- State-funded programs vary from state to state. To see the most current description of state benefits, by state, visit ARNG's Education Website at Army National Guard Education Home Page > Benefits > Click on the U.S. map icon for the state you are interested in.

- Only Service Members who are not using Federal Tuition Assistance through GoArmyEd must turn their grades in. Grades must be in an official transcript format.
- I still have questions. Who can I contact?

The ASVAB was originally designed to predict future academic and occupational success in military occupations. Since its introduction in 1968, the ASVAB has been the subject of extensive research. Numerous validation studies indicate the ASVAB assesses academic ability and predicts success in a wide variety of occupations. When a Service Member wants to retest on the ASVAB, they take the AFCT, which is the active component of the ASVAB. To learn more about the AFCT/ ASVAB and how it can help you, visit ASVAB Career Exploration Program .
Eligibility
To be eligible, a service member cannot have taken the AFCT exam within the last 6 months or have taken the AFCT more than 3 times during their military career (excluding the initial ASVAB for entry into the Army). Once a service member has taken the AFCT twice, it will be necessary to request an exception to policy (ETP) and meet additional criteria before the exam will be administered again. Once a Service Member takes the AFCT, the score is final, even if it is lower than previous scores.
Scheduling
In order to test at Camp Mabry, Service Members must submit a 4187 with their most recent scores at least 2 business days prior to the exam to Testing. Service members are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to take the GT Predictor Test prior to testing (see study resources below for more info). Other test locations may require additional criteria.

Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT)
About the DLAB
The DLAB is used to determine language aptitude for Soldiers applying for language training Certain MOS's such as Special Forces (SF)and Military Intelligence (MI) fields may require DLAB testing. A passing score is 95; retesting after obtaining a 95 or higher requires an approved exception to policy. Justification for such an exception must include relevant military reasons attested to by the unit commander.
Personnel who fail to achieve a passing score may retest in 6 months. First and second retests may be given after 6 months on approval of the immediate commander. The qualifying DLAB score required to study a particular language can be found in AR 11-6 Army Foreign Language Program
About the DLPT
The DLPT is used to evaluate language proficiency or to add a Language Identifier to a Soldier's MOS. Soldiers holding a Language Identifier and working in their MOS using that language are eligible for Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus (FLPB) with the required score. Soldiers may also be eligible to receive college credit based on their language training or testing scores.
