The Interservice Physician Assistant Program is a 2-year program with a year of didactics at Fort Sam Houston, and then a year of clinical rotations at a MEDDAC-sized hospital in the continental United States (CONUS).
The program is available to Enlisted, Warrant Officers and Officers of all military occupational specialties (MOS) and areas of concentration (AOC). At the completion of the 2-year program, the graduate is awarded a Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Enlisted and Warrant Officer graduates are commissioned as a 1LT in the Army Medical Specialist Corps, and awarded the AOC 65D. Officers are appointed based on constructive credit calculated in accordance with (IAW) Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) 6000.13 and other appropriate regulations.
To be eligible, an applicant must be a member of the Army National Guard (Enlisted, Warrant Officer, or Officer) with a minimum of 1 year of actively drilling service. Applicants with more than eight years active service are required and encouraged to request a waiver for time-in-service. Those who will be 42 years or older at date of commissioning (Enlisted are commissioned on their graduation date) are required and encouraged to submit an age waiver.
Enlisted applicants must have a GT of 110. Officers cannot exceed the rank / grade of Captain / O-3. All successful candidates who complete the program are committed to six (6) years in the National Guard, and are currently eligible for a bonus at the completion of those six years.
All applicants, regardless of academic level, must have taken the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) within five years of the FY of application and have a minimum score of 1000 with a minimum of 450 in each section.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to have a minimum of 36-months of military experience, preferably with leadership experience included, as well as 24-months of civilian experience.
All applicants must have 60 semester hours of college credit. 30 "core" semester hours must have been earned at a college or university, or an accredited distance learning course via the internet. MOS, CLEP, DANTES, examination for credit, transfer credit without a letter grade, etc. will not fulfill the 30 "core" semester hours. The 30 "core" courses are:

  • 6 SH from Humanities and/or Social Sciences
  • 6 SH Chemistry The 6SH must be "General Chemistry", "College Chemistry" or higher level (Not intro Chemistries, Environmental Chem., nor Chemistry for Non-Health Science Majors)
  • 6 SH English (3 SH must focus on composition)
  • 6 SH Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 anatomy, 3 physiology or 3 A+P I, 3 A+P II)
  • 3 SH College Algebra or higher (not prep algebra), Statistics is accepted
  • 3 SH Psychology (any)

To begin this process, an academic worksheet must be filled out by the applicant and submitted with original transcripts (cannot say "issued to student") to the Texas AMEDD Recruiting Team:

ATTN: AMEDD – 1LT Christine Carter
PO Box 5218
Austin, TX 78763-5218
The transcripts and academic worksheet will then be processed and forwarded by the Texas AMEDD Recruiting Team for final evaluation. We are notified within 45 days if the transcripts are accepted by the University of Nebraska for packet processing, and we will notify the applicant immediately of the results.
Applicant packets will only be considered for the state board if the following processes are met:
1. Academic worksheet and transcripts are sent directly to the Texas AMEDD Recruiting Team at least 60 days prior to the state board.
Any transcripts sent directly to NGB or the University of Nebraska will be returned immediately to Texas without review and the applicant will be denied from applying again for IPAP for a minimum of six (6) months.
2. Packets must be reviewed/approved through the state board (three times a year) prior to submission to the federal board (three times a year). Any packet not accepted by the state board will be sent back to the applicant with justification and recommendations for improvement.
Any packet submitted directly to the federal board without approval by the state board will result in the packet being returned immediately to Texas without review and the applicant will be denied from applying again for IPAP for a minimum of twelve (12) months.
