College Credit By Exam

If you know a subject well enough to pass the test, credit by examination saves you time and money. Testing out of a class can save valuable time as you complete your degree.

You can gain college credit in general subjects like English Composition, Algebra, History and more through:

  • CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
  • DANTES Standardized Subject Tests
  • ECE (Excelsior College Exams)

If you are an active or retired Guard member or spouse of an active Guard member you can take these exams for free at your Education Services Office on Camp Mabry or at any Active Duty base with a testing center. These are paper based tests that will be sent away for grading and you will have your results back in 3-4 weeks.

You are also eligible to take these exams at a National Test Center (NTC). Tests given at an NTC are computerized and results are returned immediately. If the NTC is located at a school on an Active Duty base, it is free to the Guard member and their spouse. If the NTC is at an off-base college, you will pay a registration fee of $25 and DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Services) will pay the $60 fee (remember to bring your military ID).

While most colleges accept these credits, it is recommended that you ask your school or program if there is a credit-by-exam limit.

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) provides college credit examinations that are widely accepted by colleges and universities. By passing these exams, service members can earn a third or more of the credits required for a college degree.

14 Paper-Based CLEP's are offered at the Education Office on Camp Mabry

To receive an immediate score report upon completion of test, you may take any of the 34 computer-based exams at an NTC such as Austin Community College for $20.

The DANTES program is an extensive series of 37 examinations in college subject areas that are comparable to the final or end-of-course examinations in undergraduate courses. ACE recommends 3 semester hours of credit per test. DANTES funds paper-based DANTES testing for eligible Service members and civilian examinees at DANTES Test Centers and at national test centers (colleges and universities) offering the Internet-based (iBT) DANTES.

Before taking credit-by-exam tests, check with your college or university to ensure the credits meet your degree requirements. Each institution determines the acceptable score and amount of credit granted for each exam.

Test out of college courses like: Criminal Justice, Personal Finance or Ethics in America
