College Credit by Examination

You can gain college credit in general subjects like English Composition, Algebra, History and more through:

  • CLEP (College Level Examination Program)
  • DANTES Standardized Subject Tests
  • ECE (Excelsior College Exams)

If you are an active or retired Guard member or spouse of an active Guard member you can take these exams for free at your Education Services Office on Camp Mabry or at any Active Duty base with a testing center. These are paper based tests that will be sent away for grading and you will have your results back in 3-4 weeks.

You are also eligible to take these exams at a National Test Center (NTC). Tests given at an NTC are computerized and results are returned immediately. If the NTC is located at a school on an Active Duty base, it is free to the Guard member and their spouse. If the NTC is at an off-base college, you will pay a registration fee of $25 and DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Services) will pay the $60 fee (remember to bring your military ID).

While most colleges accept these credits, it is recommended that you ask your school or program if there is a credit-by-exam limit.
